"Many a tale of true love can be traced to the lands of Wales, from the legend of Dwynwen Brycheiniog that lead to the Welsh Valentine’s Day of St Dwynwen’s Day, and the story that led to the creation of a mansion built entirely in the name of love.

It may be a less famous story than that of Dwynwen, whose own story did not in fact have a happy ending, the history behind Plas Rhianfa, near Beaumaris, is one of true and long lasting love.

Now an award winning hotel the building dates back to 1849 when it was built by Baronet of Bodelwyddan as a gift for his wife Lady Sarah Hay Williams.

It was intended to provide both Lady Sarah and the couple’s two daughters with a comfortable residence in the event of Sir John’s death.

Having no male heir of his own, Sir John’s title, along with his many properties and ancestral estate at Bodelwyddan, were to be inherited by his younger brother, Hugh.

The Williams’ drew inspiration for the design of the house from their experiences of travelling in the Loire region of France.

Lady Sarah was a proficient artist and made many sketches of the Loire Valley castles which served as the influence for the house.

She wanted everything in the house to be perfect, so not only was the architecture delicately chosen, so was the name. The name “Rhianfa” (which means lady’s habitat) was suggested by Rev William Hicks Owen of St. Asaph. Before the name was adopted it was discussed at length with scholars.

In 1859 Sir John died leaving Lady Sarah to live in the house until her death in 1876 when Margaret, one of the daughters, inherited the property. Soon afterwards her husband inherited an estate in Buckinghamshire and the couple moved away from Anglesey.

Lady Margaret nevertheless continued to maintain her relationship with Anglesey and after her husband’s death in 1910, Lady Margaret moved back to Plas Rhianfa permanently. She remained in the house until she died in 1930.

Little is known about what happened to the property following Lady Margaret’s death, but in 1955 the house was given to her grandson, Dr Andrew Verney, and his wife, as a wedding present, although due to work commitments in London the house was sold soon after this gift in 1957. The house was converted into apartments and much of the land sold off leaving only three of the 12 acres in the possession of the estate."
